چکیده

Mesoscale eddies in the ocean mix fluid parcels in a way that is highly constrained by the stratified nature of the fluid—so much so that much of our intuition about ocean mixing comes from thinking in density coordinates. Temporal-residual-mean (TRM) theory provides the link between the different views that are apparent from averaging turbulent flow in height coordinates and in density coordinates. The TRM theory reduces the parameterization problem from three dimensions to two dimensions and it shows how the divergent part of the relevant eddy density flux is skew-symmetric in height coordinates and that the total advection velocity can be adiabatic. The Gent-McWilliams scheme is best interpreted as a scheme for implementing the temporal residual mean. The TRM theory has very specific things to say about how the tracers in coarseresolution models should be interpreted and how the skew diffusion streamfunction should approach zero at boundaries. Here it is emphasized that the extra advection in the TRM theory is not the bolus transport because the extra TRM advection is non-divergent and diapycnal in character while the bolus velocity is divergent and adiabatic. When using eddy-permitting numerical model results to deduce a parameterization for mesoscale eddies, it is very important to use the full TRM theory, and in so doing, the parameterization task is simplified somewhat.

The Influence of Mesoscale Eddies on Coarsely Resolved Density: An Examination of Subgrid-Scale Parameterization

Coarse-resolution numerical models of ocean circulation rely on parameterizations of unresolved mesoscale eddy effects. In order to investigate the role of eddy-flux divergences in the density equation, the GFDL Modular Ocean Model (MOM) has been configured as a simple flat-bottomed channel model with sufficient resolution to represent mesoscale eddies. Eady-type baroclinic instability and a wi...

Formulation and implementation of a ‘‘residual-mean’’ ocean circulation model

A parameterization of mesoscale eddies in coarse-resolution ocean general circulation models (GCM) is formulated and implemented using a residual-mean formalism. In that framework, mean buoyancy is advected by the residual velocity (the sum of the Eulerian and eddy-induced velocities) and modified by a residual flux which accounts for the diabatic effects of mesoscale eddies. The residual veloc...

Observed and simulated submesoscale vertical pump of an anticyclonic eddy in the South China Sea

Oceanic mesoscale eddies with typical sizes of 30-200 km contain more than half of the kinetic energy of the ocean. With an average lifespan of several months, they are major contributors to the transport of heat, nutrients, plankton, dissolved oxygen and carbon in the ocean. Mesoscale eddies have been observed and studied over the past 50 years, nonetheless our understanding of the details of ...

Mesoscale perturbations control inter-ocean exchange south of Africa

[1] The quantification of inter-ocean leakage from the South Indian to the South Atlantic Ocean is an important measure for the role of the Agulhas system in the global thermohaline circulation. To explore the specific role of mesoscale variability (such as Agulhas rings and Mozambique eddies) in this process a high-resolution model (based on NEMO-ORCA) for the Agulhas region has been set up. I...

15 Years of Satellite Altimetry and Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics

The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 15 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in-situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quan...
